Set up payments before you travel
Check whether Alipay or Weixin Pay supports your overseas card and complete the requested identity verification. Test the setup before departure, retain access to bank verification messages and confirm transaction fees in the app. Some merchants and payment types may not support foreign cards.
Carry a backup
Keep some renminbi cash and a second payment method. Check ATM card-network logos and your bank’s overseas withdrawal limits and fees. For larger purchases, confirm the payment method before ordering or making a deposit.
Connectivity and essential apps
Compare roaming, a local SIM and a compatible travel eSIM; coverage, identity checks and device support differ. Some overseas services may not be reachable on mainland networks. Download needed apps and offline addresses beforehand, and ask the carrier about the services your plan actually supports.
Rail, metro and road travel
Use the official 12306 service or a clearly identified booking provider for rail. Enter your name exactly as on the travel document and bring that document for travel. For taxis or ride-hailing, keep the Chinese destination address and check the vehicle details and pickup point.
Make communication easier
Save your hotel, allergies, itinerary and emergency contacts in both Chinese and your own language. Keep a charging cable and power bank that meets carrier rules. Share your meeting point before going offline; a short phrase card often works better than a long translation in a busy station.
