First check whether a visa is needed
Review ordinary visa-free entry, transit arrangements and any applicable agreement. If none fits your passport and itinerary, consult the Chinese embassy, consulate or authorised visa centre serving your residence. Business visitors may qualify for some visa-free policies; an M visa is not automatically required for every visit.
Match the visa to the real purpose
L generally covers tourism and M covers commercial or trade activity. Other purposes use other categories. Explain mixed itineraries to the receiving office; do not rely on a tour company to decide the legal category for you.
Build your application file
Typical documents include a valid passport, application form and compliant photograph, proof of lawful residence where needed, and itinerary, hotel or invitation information appropriate to the category. Passport validity, blank pages, biometrics and additional evidence depend on the receiving office’s current checklist.
Allow processing time and check the result
Submit through the official process and allow time for additional documents or an interview. Fees and timing vary; approval is not guaranteed. When issued, check your name, passport number, entries, validity and duration of each stay before making final travel arrangements.
