China Weather & What to Pack

Pack for your regions, altitude and activities—not just the month.

Updated 6 October 2026

Spring and autumn layers

March–May and September–November can bring large temperature differences between mornings and afternoons. Pack a light jacket, breathable layers and rain protection; northern evenings may cool much earlier than southern ones.

Summer heat and rain

June–August is often hot and humid in eastern and southern cities. Choose breathable clothing, a hat, sun protection and a compact rain layer. Carry a light layer for air-conditioned trains and buildings; storms may change outdoor plans.

Winter varies widely

Northern and northeastern winters can be very cold; insulated outerwear, gloves and grippy shoes matter. Southern winters may feel damp indoors as well as outdoors. Hainan is milder, but a beach itinerary does not remove the need to check wind and rain.

Mountains and active days

Conditions at a summit may differ greatly from the arrival city. Bring walking shoes, a waterproof layer, sun protection and a small daypack. Discuss altitude and physical demands before choosing a route; rental safety equipment should be confirmed with the operator.

Business and cultural visits

Pack one neat business outfit and comfortable closed shoes. Temple visits call for modest clothing; factory visits may require long trousers, closed shoes and site-provided protective equipment. Check the destination forecast shortly before departure.
